Senior Mechanical Engineer - Contractor

This is a temporary 6-month contracted 1099 position with no benefits.

Job Functions:  
  • Applies expertise as an emerging authority in the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Conceives and develops solutions to difficult analytical and pneumatic/mechanical/electrical design problems.
  • Participates in establishing system or component design objectives and writes portions of complex specifications and engineering reports.
  • Reviews and helps to develop product specifications
  • Conducts conceptual design studies using MCAD and other applicable design tools.  Collaborates with other engineering functions
  • Develops prototype hardware using internal manufacturing resources and outside vendors
  • Tests product to verify that designs meet specification requirements such as environmental, regulatory and safety requirements
  • Generates documentation supporting the design
  • Provides training, technical advice and guidance to junior engineers. Guidance may be technical or project related as Project Leader or Lead Engineer of small to medium projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly, DFM&A (cost/tooling/process considerations), preferably using SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Understanding in design and development of injection molded plastic, plastic extrusion, casting, sheet metal, metal stampings, additive manufacturing processes, and machined metal components, and assemblies with high part counts highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and development using metric ANSI/ISO dimensioning and drafting standards highly desirable.
  • Understanding of GD&T, mechanical measurement and testing equip., and statistical analysis of test data.
  • Experience with electronic document control systems in medical device and/or medical equipment design and development.
  • Highly skilled at analytical reasoning, mechanism design, creative problem solving, and mathematical analysis.
  • Ability to create and meet scheduled timelines (manage and coordinate tasks as required).
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with dimensioning and tolerance, thermal and structural analysis, and vibration testing/analysis
  • Intermediate knowledge of FDA, IEC and UL standards relating to medical electronic equipment
  • Strong technical and analytical ability, verbal and written communication skills, ingenuity and creativity, interpersonal and project management skills
  • Ability to operate test equipment such as various pressure and flow measurement equipment, temperature/humidity chambers, PC-based data recorders, simulators, DVM’s and oscilloscopes
  • Familiarity and the ability to operate basic shop equipment such as a drill press, lathe, milling machine, brake and shear

Minimum Requirements: 
  • BSME or MSME and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in design/product development of electro pneumatic assemblies including technical supervision of sub-projects
  • Formal training in basic and advanced topics in Solid Works is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, MS Office applications,  and Adobe Acrobat
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, MCAD/CAE software and database management software preferred
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project preferred
